At times it seems that celebrities forget that everything that they say is under a microscope. In the last few years as “hiphop” culture become more mainstream more celebrities feel it is okay to use the same terms. For example many white celebrities feel it is now okay to use the N-word because it is “so cool.” Madonna recently was caught into the loop when she posted a picture on instagram and use the N-word to describe her son.
According to billboard.com “The photo was a shot of the 13-year-old boxing, with the caption reading, “No one messes with Dirty Soap! Mama said knock you out! #disn—a.” The pop superstar has 1.1 million followers on Instagram. Madonna later re-posted the same photo on Instagram, with a new caption, “Ok let me start this again. #get off my dick haters!” On Saturday afternoon, Madonna deleted the Instagram post altogether, and instead posted an apology.”
Madonna quickly issued a statement of regret and apologized for the use of the term. She said that she was “sorry if I offended anyone with my use of the N word on Instagram,” she continued “It was not meant as a racial slur.. I am not a racist. There’s no way to defend the use of the word. It was all about intention.. It was used as a term of endearment toward my son who is white. I appreciate that it’s a provocative word and I apologize if it gave people the wrong impression. Forgive me.”
Madonna got caught putting her foot in her mouth. To be honest this is probably something she says regularly as why would you think it was okay to say it publicly if you have not used the term privately before. But it’s hard to fault Madonna when the term is used so loosely these days. As I sit her writing this article my little brother is playing GTA 5 in the background and all I hear is N-word this N-word that. It is kinda hard for people not think it is okay to use the term. Think about it.
