Check out our great interview with Rev. Aaron Williams about his single, “Rend Your Heart.”

Why did you select this song as your current single?

I chose Rend Your Heart as the title track because it’s been through self-examination of my own heart and motives, that I realized that what I was professing I was doing for God and His Kingdom, were really being done for Aaron. As I walk out my own soul’s salvation I’m discovering that I have to present my heart to God daily. Although he has helped me clean up my life externally, my heart is another issue. Only God can clean up my heart, and as he gave me this song while in conversation with Him, I now get the chance to allow audiences to take a peek into my journey with the Lord.

How does this single relate to the rest of the album, EP or Mix-tape?

The entire CD is a project based on repentance, renewal, and restoration. This song consummates that.

What was the writing process for the song?

The writing process for this particular song actually came easy as it was just an extension of the conversation that I was having with the Lord in prayer. Actually, for this song, while I was talking to the Lord and learning how to be transparent, I began hearing the music in my head in the middle of the conversation. And, I simply began to put the words I was petitioning and inquiring to God about, into the music. The rest is the finished compilation of words and lyrics that started with simply opening my mouth in an honest conversation with God.

What does this song’s lyrics mean to you?

Sitting here on the other side of this project, it brings me to a place of extreme joy because I know the state I was in while I was writing this song. These lyrics serve as a reminder to continue to pour my heart out before God in a transparent way, and not try coming to him in my flashy, charismatic self. People often see me as outspoken and courageous. But, when I go before the presence of the Lord I always remember to humble myself. Rend Your Heart, is that constant reminder.

What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?

One of the hardest words for me to digest as a Christian, a Gospel Singer, and a Minister of the Bible, is the word, “perform”, although I understand what you are asking from a secular point of view. I prefer using the term, “minister,” simply because that is the purpose of my engaging with audiences—to minister to them in song, because any song that I “perform,” ministers to me first. So, seeing me in person singing this song, would bear witness to what I’m saying. I believe the masses would be able to see a Christian who loves God, and loves God’s people enough, to share God with them in song.

Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?

I don’t think anyone can make a really good assessment of anyone from just one song. If you’ve listened to the album, although the theme throughout hovers around repentance and forgiveness, you’ll hear so many variations of Aaron Williams. So the short answer would be no. But, you can get a feel of where I was when I wrote the song.

Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?

There is an idea in my head for a video. Being brand new to the process, that’s where it currently resides, In MY Head. [Laughter]

One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?

The Holy Spirit continues to not only motivate me, but He also continues to deposit songs in me and also gives me an ear to hear him. My motivation is also my excitement into seeing what the Lord wants to do with me and for me in purpose. I’m excited in seeing me move more towards that in music as well as in ministry. And, I personally just want something I can listen to that you don’t have to question, “Is that Gospel/Christian music?”
