Why did you select this song as your current single?
I wanted to release a single that was about love, but one that people could relate to right now- the idea that we’ve all been hurt, but we all still have hope, and if we stay open, love IS possible and CAN come into our lives.
How does this single relate to the rest of the Album, EP or Mix-tape?
This is the first single of an album of singles. I will release one single every few months until there are the 11 of the album, at which point I will release everything as an album with bonus tracks. It’s a new model of music distribution for me as an independent artist.
What was the writing process for the song?
Like all my best songs, the main parts of the song sort of popped into my head seemingly out of nowhere in about 5 minutes- it all happened at first, one day while driving. I live in Los Angeles, where I spend a lot of time driving! I recorded the verse and chorus into my phone, and then later at home played through it on the piano. I brought it into the spinout records studio with producer Bernie Larsen, and as we were laying down the basic structure for the song, he and I began tweaking the lyrics here, extending a verse there, etc.
What does this song’s lyric mean to you?
It’s written for my beloved soulmate, Carlo, but it’s also for ALL of us who have been hurt before and are afraid to open up to trying again in love. I feel like SO many people I know have this thought pattern, “Oh, I was so hurt before, I don’t want to open up again just to get hurt again.” But the thing is, you’re never going to find love when you stay shut down. And even if you find the love of your life and live “happily ever after,” life still happens and life still can hurt. So to me, the most important thing is to keep your heart wide open all the time and just keep on loving, no matter what.
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
You’ll have to request me to come to your town so you can find out!
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
Yes, I think so, because in this song you hear both my very commercial pop song structure as a writer, yet you hear both my sorrow and my hope in life; you hear my voice in all its ranges from low and resonant to soaring and high; then again it’s sort of like a little bit Eva Cassidy and a little bit Sarah Brightman and a little bit…. I don’t know! I feel like all my major influences (Annie Lennox, Andrea Bocelli, Leonard Cohen, Edith Piaf, classical music, soul, R&B, even a little bit of country) all kind of wink at you throughout.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
There is a video PLANNED… just raising a little funding now!
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
Gosh, you know, music is such a gift. It’s at once earthly AND divine, and we get to take part in this wonderful expression of discovery and joy and sorrow and love. I’ve been in parts of the world with people where we did not share a common language let alone a common belief system or point of view but we could share through music. Music opens up the possibility for communication and mutual respect, for learning, for opening doors. That’s what I care about right now with my music.
