Why did you select this song as your current single?
It is a combination of a great example of what we can do musically, and a potent conceptual piece. It’s also probably one of the more widely appreciated songs.
How does this single relate to the rest of the Album, EP or Mix-tape?
This song gives a good overview lyrically of some of my philosophies about organized religion’s relationship with itself and science, which is further investigated in several other songs on the album. It also features Chris Plummer on bass and lead guitar, so it gives the listener a good impression of the style he brings to my music, and he is featured heavily on the rest of the album.
What was the writing process for the song?
Years of meditation about organized religion, God, and science and rationality led to some insights that seemed to deserve sharing. A bit of experimentation with different chord progressions tempered by my ear to fit the mood I was going for was the main part of the process for the song’s structure. Then when the basic structure was written as a solo acoustic guitar and vocal piece, the other musicians were brought in to bring their own styles to it and it was recorded. The drum set, bass, acoustic guitar, lead vocal, and keyboard track were recorded all at once, and the lead guitar and backing vocal track were added in after.
What does this song’s lyric mean to you?
Trying just to make rational sense of the contradictions between science and religion can seem like trying to crack some sort of code these days, but despite my very scientific perspective, religious experience and phenomena still have a distant, but heavenly present gravity and luster. The chorus is designed to leave the listener to interpret the nature of the heavenly bodies we scientifically know, while the double entendre acknowledges the “stars” of religion still shining in at least some sense in the face of a scientific lenses
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
It would depend somewhat on the arrangement and accompanying musicians. Since I play with different musicians at different times lately, and sometimes solo, the song can really take on a different type of vibe depending on the artists I’m playing with.
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
Maybe in part, but not in full. A lot of stylistic similarities are present in this one that are also in other tracks, but there’s still some range musically and conceptually in the rest of my material that is not represented easily by this song alone.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
There is currently a YouTube recording of a live solo performance of this song at a festival. If I could get a producer interested in backing a more conceptual video I’d gladly make one.
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
I’m trying to provide society with something beneficial, whether it be some wisdom, love, good vibes, or any other form of positivity. I love that dealing with deep issues and problems can still be entertaining in the form of songs, and know that what I’ve learned from others’ songs has touched my life in important ways, so hopefully my songs can help contribute too.
